Construction Site Fueling: Keeping Equipment Moving

Construction Site Fueling: Keeping Equipment Moving

Construction sites depend on equipment that must keep working: excavators, generators, compactors, pickups and support vehicles. Fuel planning is part of keeping the site productive, but it also needs controls so that fuel is used where it is intended.

List equipment and fuel types

Record each machine or vehicle, its registration or asset number, the fuel type and the person responsible. Equipment that stays on site should be included, not only road vehicles. A current asset list is the foundation of any fuel control.

Plan site access

Decide how fuel will reach the site and who will receive it. If equipment is fueled on site, agree the location, access route and supervision. Safety and storage requirements should be handled by competent people and in line with the applicable rules; this article is not a substitute for site-specific safety advice.

Control who can fuel

Authorise a small number of people to request or receive fuel. Record the equipment, litres and date for each transaction. If a generator or machine has an hour meter, record the reading so fuel use can be compared with operating hours.

Review consumption against the work

Fuel use should make sense for the work completed. A machine that is used heavily will consume more than one on standby. Review the records with the site team and investigate large differences early.

Plan the account before the busy period

Construction work can change quickly. Agree the account process, authorised people and review routine before the site reaches its busiest period. This reduces the chance of fuel becoming an emergency purchase.
